EXPONOR and Colbún seal alliance to measure and offset the exhibition’s carbon footprint

During the National Meeting of SICEP Suppliers, EXPONOR and Colbún formalized an alliance aimed at measuring, offsetting and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, along with waste recycling and sustainable practices in next year's most important mining-energy exhibition.

The agreement will make it possible to offset emissions of all stages of the event, such as assembly, operation and disassembly, as well as those associated with the transport of visitors and exhibitors. To this end, Colbún will provide certified carbon credits from its Quilleco hydroelectric plant, located in the Biobío Region, to offset the emissions.

The 21st edition of EXPONOR, which will be held between June 8 and 11, 2026, plans to neutralize about 8,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to planting over 76,000 trees. With an estimated 45,000 attendees and 1,200 exhibitors, concrete measures will be implemented during the exhibition to reduce the environmental impact, including shared transport, energy efficiency and waste recycling.

EXPONOR has implemented measures to manage and reduce its carbon footprint, optimising logistics, mobility and waste management. "Turning EXPONOR into a carbon-neutral event is a clear sign of the direction taken by the industry we represent, working for the sustainability of the territory in which we carry out industrial activities," said Andrea Moreno, the exhibition manager.

Working together for a greener industry

Within the framework of this alliance, Colbún will be responsible for applying the methodology to calculate the exhibition's carbon footprint, providing the necessary technical support to ensure that the measurement process is carried out under internationally recognized standards.

Evelyn Stevens, head of Climate Change at Colbún, explained that the work will focus on identifying and quantifying the emission sources associated with the operation of the event. "We are going to measure all the emissions generated by five main activities: energy consumption in pre-assembly, assembly and post-assembly; the transport used; the goods and services purchased; and the waste generated," said Stevens.

With this alliance, EXPONOR responds to the needs of the industry and the growing environmental demands of the global market. The objective is to consolidate a more responsible management model and move towards practices that effectively reduce the impact of the event, establishing a standard that can be replicated in future editions of the exhibition.

An invitation to be part of industrial innovation

EXPONOR 2026 will be held from June 8 to 11 and promises to provide a space where technology, industry and business converge. The organisers warn that spaces are limited and invites interested companies to secure their participation early.

The event has outstanding strategic partners, such as Albemarle, Antofagasta Minerals, Capstone Copper, CODELCO, El Abra, Escondida | BHP, Glencore, Pampa Norte | BHP, Sierra Gorda SCM and SQM.

And it is sponsored by key entities, such as APRIMIN, Consejo Minero, Generadoras, InvestChile, the Ministry of Mining, the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, the Ministry of Energy, ProChile, SOFOFA and SONAMI.
