Chile moves towards carbon neutrality

The regional energy grid currently has an installed capacity of 7,582.49 MW, composed of conventional sources (oil, coal, and natural gas), photovoltaic solar energy, wind, solar and geothermal generation.

The Antofagasta Region has over 3,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity and, given its excellent potential in clean energies such as wind and solar, it also has a mining industry that will require these for internal consumption, with this being one of the privileged areas for the development of Green Hydrogen.

Currently, our territory leads this segment with a concentration of 29% of total projects at the national level, and it is estimated that the construction of nine renewable energy projects, will as a whole add a total of 2,426.3 MW.

The sustainability plans are examples of these decarbonization commitments in the mining industry. BHP has developed its Sustainability Approach with targets for 2030 based on the “People, Planet and Prosperity” pillars; CODELCO, meanwhile, through “commitment 20-30” has established a strategy to combat climate change, contributing to responsible mining and a greener future. And Antofagasta Minerals has established its sustainability policy that aims at initiatives that respond to the needs of the environment and that generate a new way of mining.

“Today we have a Framework Law on Climate Change, which sets a goal for the country to be carbon neutral by 2050. In this sense, we are faced with the challenge of decarbonizing our energy grid by 2040, replacing energy generated using fossil fuels with clean and sustainable energy. For this reason, we are working so more renewable energy projects are created, encouraging electromobility and promoting Green Hydrogen,” added a government spokesperson.

Currently, our territory leads this segment with a concentration of 29% of total projects at the national level, and it is estimated that the construction of nine renewable energy projects, will as a whole add a total of 2,426.3 MW.

Energy Pavilion

With an investment of US $24,000 in energy projects by 2026, the Energy Industry is essential for the International Exhibition for Technologies and Innovations in Mining and Energy, EXPONOR 2024, which will once again have an exclusive space to enhance the value chain of this segment.

The Energy Pavilion is available to all companies wishing to generate new business opportunities and increase project viability. Renewable energy generators, companies in the area of maintenance and operation of current power plants, and companies in the field of electromobility, with energy efficiency solutions for industrial processes, among others, are welcome at EXPONOR 2024. The exhibition dates are June 03 to 06; four days full of business and insight into the new challenges faced by the industry.
