EXPONOR 2017 TO HOLD SEMINAR ON THE CONTRIBUTION OF WOMEN IN THE MINING INDUSTRY
One of the conferences that will take place at the event will put forward a pertinent issue for the mining industry. Top authorities from the country will participate in the event, which will seek to highlight the contribution of women to the industry’s productivity. “Women and Mining: 50-50 workplace participation, a contribution to productivity” is the name of the seminar to take place on May 19th, as part of the mining industry exhibition. The topic is a relevant one to large mining companies as well as Chile’s public sector. Fernando Cortez, general manager of the Antofagasta Industrial Association (AIA), the business body that organizes the event, pointed out that one of the aims of Exponor is to highlight current issues, to “create spaces that allow for conversations that contribute to the development of the workforce in our country, benefiting in this way the productivity of the industry”. In this respect, Viviana Ramírez, regional director of Sernameg, the national service for women and gender equality, underlined the importance of discussing female participation in the mining industry: “the intention is to make the contribution of women in the labor force linked to mining processes more visible. We are moving towards a situation where the industry offers more opportunities to women, but also recognizes that the contribution of women to the workplace should not be undervalued. It’s not about hiring women just because they are women, but rather increasing the number of female workers in mining in order to contribute to the development of this industry in the region and the country as a whole”. Another voice in support of the seminar has been that of the president of the National Productivity Council (CNP) Joseph Ramos, who added that “improving productivity is fundamental in ensuring that our mining industry continues to lead the world in this sector. And the greater inclusion of women in the workforce may be a factor that contributes to this”. The seminar, which will take place on Friday May 19th at 11:00, will include the participation of Viviana Ramírez, Sernameg Antofagasta Region; Claudia Pascual, Minister for Women and Gender Equality; Aurora Williams, Minister of Mining; Joseph Ramos, President of the National Productivity Council; Verónica Bravo, Director for Gender Diversity at Codelco Chile; Tatiana Carvajal, Director of Human Resources at Finning Chile; Ana María Rabagliati, Vice President for Human Resources at Antofagasta Minerals; and Cherie Gallardo, academic at the Mining Business School, Universidad Católica del Norte.
